Start with your own definition

At OffGridScout, we use off-grid as a practical starting point: deciding which everyday needs you want to provide for yourself. Your project might be a weekend cabin without mains electricity, a small growing space, or a home with a more independent supply of water and energy. Those are different undertakings. Give yours a clear description before comparing equipment.

Picture an ordinary day

Write down what happens from waking up to going to bed. Where does drinking water come from? How will you cook and keep food cold? What needs electricity? What happens after washing up? Work through an ordinary rainy day as well as the sunny version in your imagination. This simple exercise gives every later decision a purpose.

Look at the whole project

We organize the journey into power, water and sanitation, shelter and comfort, food and growing, connection and security, and everyday upkeep. They overlap: a refrigerator becomes part of your power plan, while a kitchen garden creates another reason to think about water and visits. Keep decisions together so you can see those relationships.

Choose your next small step

Describe the place, how often you will use it, and three things you want it to do well. Then list what already exists and what remains unknown. An unanswered question is useful information, not a reason to buy something. Save those questions in your project and work through one subject at a time.
